INTRODUCTION

This bibliography is the outgrowth of a personal project begun fifteen years ago to collect materials by, for, and about women who have traveled and explored in Africa.

The collection  has grown to a point where it now includes about three quarters of the items listed in this bibliography.

While initially the collection only included materials about women who had traveled and explored in Africa, it now also includes those materials relevant to missionary work by women in Africa.

Never before has a bibliographic work brought together all these materials.

The `Women Travelers’ bibliography is divided into four sections: (1) Alphabetical list by author; (2) Citations indexed by countries visited; (3) Reference materials on women travelers, explorers and missionaries; and (4) Index of travelers, explorers and missionaries.

The numbered main citations that appear in section one also include information on the country or countries visited, the traveler’s name and nationality, and the birth and death dates when possible.

The work will be updated on a regular basis, including all future publications on this subject in books or periodicals.
