Abstract: | The Sudan is undergoing a period of rapid change. The lives of Sudanese women particularly are becoming different as they assume new roles and responsibilities in response to altered circumstances. In this book, five middle-aged Muslim women from the town of Sennar, Blue Nile Province, talk about their families and homes, their hopes and aspirations, their work and their social lives. Through their careers, as hairdresser, market woman, midwife, holy woman and leader of a spirit possession cult, the author looks at developments in Sudanese society in general. The interviews were held during the period 1980-1985. They have been transcribed, translated and edited, though attempts were made to keep as closely as possible to the women's own words. |
