Abstract: | Islamic titleholders in Yorubaland, Nigeria, are overnumerous. In Ibadan town alone there are as many as thirty Islamic titles. Comparable numbers exist among the Egba, Ijebu, Lagos and Ilorin Yoruba. In this article the author looks at the origins and development of some of these titles, how they are conferred, the duties and functions of the titleholders, and the practical value of these titles in contemporary society. He concludes that the art of conferring Islamic titles on illustrious Muslims in appreciation of their contribution to Islam is not altogether a novel practice in Islam. However, the influence of culture, tradition, locality and the sociohistorical development of Islam in Yorubaland has reduced the institution of Islamic titles to window dressing, especially since the introduction in the 1970s of honorary Islamic titles. To correct this trend, more emphasis must be laid on the worthiness of prospective titleholders. Ref. |
