Abstract:Edition of a Hausa poem written down in Arabic characters ('Ajami'), based on a xeroxcopy of a manuscript in the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, in Legon. The poem has no formal title and is thus known from its incipit: 'NŻa fŻara da sunan Ta'ŻalŻa' (I began in the name of the Almighty). The poem, credited to Alhaji Umaru from Kete-Krachi, was composed probably sometime between 1904 and 1919 in praise of a certain 'UthmŻan, 'sarkin zangŻo' (head of the foreigners) of Kumasi. As far as the contents is concerned, the poem is an important source for researchers interested in the formation, functioning and structure of Hausa settlements in present-day Ghana. The author provides a transliteration of the Hausa text and an English translation, together with photographs of both sides of the 16 folios covered by the poem. Notes, ref.
