Abstract: | The stereotype view often found in the literature, that African women are passive and helpless, is misleading and wrong. Through women's communal endeavours and daily tasks they are active agents, and women's agency is constantly being reinvented in the context of political and social change, as evidenced by a number of examples from West Africa, such as the Igbo Women's War of 1929, the institution of marriage, the status of women in society and the responsibilities of married women.
