Abstract:The extent of trade between South Africa and Australia has always been restricted by the similar nature of their export mix; however, the level of trade has only rarely attained its full potential. The author gives a general background account of the history of trade relations between Australia and South Africa and analyses the present structure of this trade and future prospects. He concludes that although it seems unlikely that the two countries will become major trading partners in the future, there certainly exists scope for trade between them to expand. Whether this happens will depend on the absolute levels of real economic growth and on the degree of openness that is allowed to exist in the structure of the two economies. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
