Abstract: | The shared experiences, skills and resources of NGOs working in rural KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, form the starting point for this paper, which describes three case studies in which community development helped to resolve serious conflicts, viz. the Lima Rural Development Foundation's involvement in 1992-1993 in a water reticulation project for the periurban areas of Murchison and Bhobhoyi, the Bridge Foundation's involvement in a road building project in the Madlebe tribal area, and the role of Siyabone, the Creative Learning Trust, in introducing additional skills and knowledge into the Amanyuswa tribal areas of Vulamehlo. Common constructive approaches to addressing conflicts which emerge from the case studies include assisting communities to access resources, services and employment opportunities, thus addressing basic needs; lobbying or acting as a catalyst for communities to lobby government and other agencies for the provision of development services; initiating ventures necessitating leaders of opposing factions to work together; facilitating the development of common visions and goals; building the capacity of communities to handle responsibilities efficiently; informally or formally mediating between differing parties; and delivering on promises and thus inspiring further development.
