Abstract:In November 1995, Guinea-Bissau presented its formal application for admission to the Union économique et monétaire ouest-africaine (UEMOA), which was formally approved in May 1996. This article analyses the economic position of the country in the CFA zone and describes the successes and failures of structural adjustment over the past decade (1987-1997). The impending entry of Guinea-Bissau in the UEMOA implies large and deep changes in monetary and exchange rate policies as well as in the legal framework. There appear to be no strong economic reasons either for or against incorporation in the UEMOA and no lucrative short-term effects are to be expected. The benefits will accrue in the medium and long term. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in French and German.
