Abstract: | This article argues that, were Western corporations to adopt a more enlightened attitude towards the ecological issues raised by Ken Saro-Wiwa, in particular the environmental rights of millions of residents of the Niger Delta and its hinterland (Nigeria), positive results could be obtained for all actors. The article first remarks upon the nature of America's indifference to African topics in general, and the situation in the Niger Delta region in particular. Then it shows that the environmental model is ideal for the purpose of establishing the necessary common ground: it is both ethical and practical. It presents evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model and proposes peaceful and socially acceptable procedures to improve the situation in the Niger Delta region as a whole. Notes, ref. |
