Abstract: | Pottery making is a major occupation among women in Niger State, Nigeria. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the traditional pottery-making industry among six linguistically distinct rural societies: the Koro at Shako in Suleja Local Government Area; the Ura at Ringa and Pondagari in Rafi Local Government Area; the Nupe at Shegba and Dadi in Lavum Local Government Area; the Gwari at Tao in Shiroro Local Government Area; the Dukkawa of Shagari, the Avadi Kambari at Huwa, and the Abaka Kambari at Salka in Magama Local Government Area. The following aspects are discussed: the influence of geology on the raw materials used; similarities and differences in techniques of pottery manufacture; variability in tool use; decoration (rouletting, stamping, incision, grooving, perforations, painting, compound decorations) and pot forms.
