Title:'Spanish Sahara': freedom for Franco
Author:Anonymous
Year:1971
Periodical:The African Communist
Issue:45
Pages:69-70
Language:English
Geographic term:Western Sahara
Subject:independence
Abstract:Spanish Sahara is known to be rich in oil, gas, iron, copper and - most importantly of all - phosphate. Both Mauretania and Morocco have claimed sovereignty over this 103,000 square miles desert territory. In 1971 a referendum will be hold there by Spain. Morocco has meanwhile abandoned its claim and will accept Saharan 'independence'. This has probably come under quite strong pressure from Franco's ally, the U.S.A. which has vital military bases in Morocco. The Sahara territory's independence will be entirely bogus and will, in fact, constitute freedom for Franco. The government of the territory will pass into the hands of the head of the R'Gheba clan, who is a merchant in the pocket of Spain. His relations with Spain will protect him from Mauretanian claims.
