Abstract: | The Abuja Treaty which established the African Economic Community (AEC) was signed in Abuja on 3 June 1991 and came into force in May 1994. It was aimed at fostering the social, economic and cultural development of the African continent through the integration of the economies of the various countries. The author, Director of the National Planning Commission of Nigeria, outlines the historical background to the Treaty and summarizes the objectives of the AEC, the modalities for its establishment, the Community's main organs, achievements to date, and constraints.
