Abstract:Some processes of environmental degradation currently under way in Africa are of key importance for the earth as a whole. This is especially so in the case of the destruction of the ecosystems of the humid, evergreen tropical rain forest, and desertification, both intensified by human activity and increasing population densities. The idea of protecting nature through the enactment of special laws applying to valuable and endangered species was introduced by the Europeans at the turn of the 20th century. South Africa has the longest history of nature protection. East Africa is another region with a long history of nature protection and famous national parks. The beginnings of nature protection in West Africa are also connected with the colonial period. In Zaire, the first legal regulations for the protection of elephants appeared after their massacre of 1889. The problems of environmental protection in Africa today should be identified with the problems of rational management of natural resources, and considered in connection with the problems of overpopulation, low level of economic development, and shortage of financial means.
