Abstract: | With the advent of independence in 1980, a number of changes were introduced in the education system in Zimbabwe. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey of 600 respondents in Masvingo District, the present author assesses the attitudes of parents towards these changes. Overall, the majority of the respondents were in favour of the current education system, although many expressed concern over the expense of education and the high failure rate. Nonetheless, about 72 percent of the respondents felt that the secondary school education system had changed for the better. They approved of mass education, the establishment of many secondary schools, the automatic promotion of pupils into secondary schools, Education with Production, equal emphasis on practical and academic subjects, and education for self-reliance. The introduction of Zim-Science was regarded favourably by 48.3 percent of the respondents, unfavourably by 51.7 percent. The attempt to localize examinations was not approved of by the majority of the parents, who felt that this might lower academic standards. Bibliogr., sum. |
