Abstract: | The co-operative movement in E. Nigeria has grown immensely since the war and there are now over 600 societies, of which 500 are in the Calabar Province. Women play a very active role and it is estimated that there are about 90 women's societies with a total of around 10.000 members in Calabar Province. Most of the societies are Thrift and Credit Societies, and there is a big accent on savings, although members are allowed loans to start business enterprises, etc. These women's societies seem destined to wield a strong influence on Nigeria's development. |
