Abstract:This study is concerned with the Swahili-speaking infertile Moslems of the coastal villages with their predominantly female population, with a high degree of stability of both form and population: The position of women and attitudes to marriage and sex; the background to marriage; attitudes and practices supposed to be based on western forms of sex relations; tribal and Islamic marriages of a divorced woman; secret marriage marriage between relatives; nominal marriage to permit remarriage of a previously divorced couple] marriage after common-law union; widow inheritance marriage; prostitution; lovers; common-law u-nions; mixed unions; problems of marital adjustment and choice; the instability of marriage as a fundamental of coastal life; conclusion.
