Abstract: | Describes the introduction of the system of indirect rule in Benin from 1897 to 1930, which was attended by many errors: the Oba lost many of his powers he enjoyed before the imposition of British rule; the powers enjoyed by the lyase were anything but traditional; the district head did not always owe their appointments to their traditional positions, etc. In the light of all this, it was not surprising that there were protests against the system. In the 1930s a major reorganisation of the native administration system took place. Bibl., map, photographs. |
