Abstract:This paper examines labour market changes accompanying the process of structural adjustment and, in particular, the resulting impact on women's economic participation. In doing so, the paper explores the manner in which structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) can alter overall levels of employment as well as conditions in the organization of production so as to significantly affect women's participation and bargaining power within a market economy and within the household. The analysis makes use of the experience of two countries that have undergone structural adjustment in the 1980s, namely, Zambia and the Philippines, to illustrate how gender permeates the functioning of labour markets and how economic reforms create differential impacts on women and men vis-à-vis the use of their labour time. The study reveals that the economic restructuring undertaken by the Philippines and Zambia during the 1980s did not necessarily bring about significant changes in the configurations of the labour market such that gender equality would be promoted.
