Abstract:Examination of the pattern of evacuating palm kernels in Nigeria in order to identify inefficiencies in the shipping pattern, and also to obtain a quantitative impression of what the excess or insufficient demand for the commodity at the ports is costing the Palm Produce Board in terms of inland shipping costs. The paper is divided into six sections: introduction; the formal model employed in the study; sources of data employed in the study; results obtained from the analysis of the palm kernel evacuation problem, including the optimal patterns obtained from shipping palm kernels to the ports and the processing mills in the country, and the optimal patterns obtained from shipping palm kernels to one major external destination; the relative shipments of palm kernels through the ports under different formulations of the model; conclusions and recommendations.
