Abstract: | The financial services provided by the Foundation for International Community Assistance (Finca) in Malawi are among the many donor or government-supported interventions in informal financial markets to address the needs of the urban and rural poor. This article is based on a detailed study of the operations of Finca, which offers financial services to poor women in urban and semi-urban areas of Blantyre district. Data were collected both at institutional and beneficiary level. Two groups known as Village Banks, one in Chilomoni and the other in Bangwe, were visited, and the participatory rural appraisal method was used to evaluate the impact of the programme. The author analyses the design of the programme, the extent of outreach, resource allocation, financial performance, and sustainability. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English and French. |
