Abstract: | This article deals with the Islamization of the Nile Valley and region east of it, from the frontier with Egypt at Aswan to Sinnar in the South. This area includes the 3 Christian Kingdoms of 'Alwa, Muqarra, and al'Maris or Nobadia which were united, possibly due to Muslim pressure, in the 7th century A.D. This was the area of Nubia with its capital Dunqula. Between these kingdoms and the Red Sea, Buja country, composed of a number of principalities, extended from Aswan to Nasawwa. The Muslims entered the Sudan by different routes. The resistance of the original inhabitants was broken by force and treaties. This struggle lasted from the first Muslim- Nubian clashes in the 7th century till the adoption of Islam in 'Alwa in the 16th century. With the adoption of Islam in 'Alwa the history of Christianity in the Eastern Sudan came to an end. Bibliography. |
