Abstract:In this article, the author follows Fortes' method of analysis of Ashanti household structure (Meyer Fortes, 'Time and social structure; an Ashanti case study' in Meyer Fortes (ed.), 'Social structure' (1949)) and shows, from a census of Manteke, that over time several distinct factors produce the variation in household structure. These factors are age, sex, marriage and divorce, labour migration and return, the rights and obligations of kinship, and the relative economic independence of women in the village. Their interaction produces patterns which fit the phases of the domestic development cycle identified by Fortes: expansion, dispersion and replacement. In Manteke, alternative forms of housholds are possible in each of these phases. Notes, tab., French sum.
