Abstract:The Somali of the Northern Frontier District of Kenya seem united on the issue of seceding from Kenya and joining the Somali Republic, but their neighbours, the Boran, who are ethnically close and follow a similar mode of life, have shown no such unity. The Boran of Isiolo District have declared for secession, those of Marsabit District have opposed secession, and in Moyale District secession has been opposed except by a minority who graze in the eastern part of the district. The Commission (1962) 'to investigate public opinion' in the N.F.D. noted that 'the division of opinion (on secession) almost exactly corressponds to the division between Moslem and non-Moslem'. The aim of the present article is to indicate the factors underlying the expansion of Islam in Isiolo and its countering in the Marsabit and Moyale Districts.
