Abstract: | During the struggle for coastal autonomy in the late 1950's, 100 Arab women from Mombasa successfully petitioned the colonial government in Kenya to protest discriminatory legislation that denied them the vote but gave it to women of other ethnic communities. This paper elucidates Muslim women's motivation and ability to organize by studying the development of women's organizations in Mombasa from the 1930's to the present, from lelemama dance associations such as Ibinaal Wata and Buna Saada to newer organizations such as the Muslim women's Institute and the Muslim women's Cultural Association. This paper discusses the functions, consciousness, continuities, innovations and limitations of women's group in Mombasa. Notes, ref. |
