Abstract: | A number of small Muslim states lay in a ring south of the nuclear Ethiopian states of Axum. As the Kingdom of Axum grew, the Muslim states were overwhelmed one after another partly because of internal dissention and personal jealousies between rulers. Yet there was a countertrend towards Islamic unity. These consisted of popular movements directed by shayks, sayyids and sharifs. These movements are the subject of this paper. Notes. |
