Abstract:This study examines the effectiveness of special classes on slow learners' performance in mathematics. Subjects were a sample of 246 slow learners drawn from 44 registered primary schools in the Masvingo region, Zimbabwe. The study was conducted in 1997 and found that slow learners receiving instruction from the special class performed better than those who received instruction from the mainstream. The findings also indicate that early identification and intervention are vital to the performance of slow learners. Slow learners who were identified and placed in special classes whilst in grade 4 performed better than those identified whilst in grades 5 and 6. App., bibliogr., sum.
