Abstract: | This paper illustrates the use of the concept of a fair trade partnership in a case study of the trading relationship initiated in 1994 between Cafédirect and one of its suppliers, the KNCU, a coffee marketing cooperative in Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. The company Cafédirect is a British alternative trading organization (ATO), itself a joint venture between four of the leading ATOs in the UK. The approach to fair trade becoming dominant among ATOs is partnership, i.e. a trading relationship that has both market-based and ethical elements and that aims to be sustainable in the long term. The key stakeholders are the producers, the producer group, the ATO, and the consumers. The focus in this paper is on the partnership between the ATO and the producer group. The paper investigates what partnership means in fair trade. It highlights the necessary conditions which make a partnership work. A decisive aspect of the structure of the partnership is participation in planning and setting objectives. One of the main problems in the partnership between the KNCU and Cafédirect is the weak commitment of the producer partner to the developmental as opposed to the market dimensions of the partnership. The danger is that the ATO becomes identified as a resource to be tapped, a provider of assistance and consultant rather than a partner.
