Abstract: | The suggestion that the ANC in South Africa is extending its control over civil society and democratic institutions may be challenged on the grounds that this underestimates the strength of South African civil society, which can be seen as a counter-veiling force to ANC dominance. According to the present author, there is certainly reason to fear that the party may, indeed, desire a greater degree of control. He gives examples of ANC plans to use its political dominance to launch an assault on institutions which have thus far retained a high degree of autonomy. The tendency to concentrate power at the centre is justified by ANC apologists in the name of democratic centralism. This doctrine is not known for its defence of democracy. Sum. (p. 6-7). |
