Abstract: | Ijaye-Orile (Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State, Nigeria) was initially an Egba farm settlement. As a result of its fertile soils and location on the caravan route, it soon became a major town with strong socioeconomic and political powers. After presenting an outline of Ijaye history, this paper examines the archaeological relics (amongst others a pathway, a circular structure, a ditch and embankment, and a workshop) studied in Ijaye-Orile in March-April 1996. It distinguishes three occupation phases in Ijaye, viz. the Egba settlement phase, the Kurunmi phase, and the present settlement phase. Not much is known historically about the Egba occupation phase. What is known with certainty is that Egba occupation came to an end in 1829 when Oyo refugee soldiers captured Ijaye, but there is also mention of the sacking of the town in c. 1775 on the orders of Alaafin Abiodun.
