Abstract: | The Yoruba of Nigeria had, and still have, strong textile traditions, some of which, however, in the face of imports and local industrial manufacturing, are dying; yet others remain alive and deeply rooted in Yoruba culture. This paper presents a synopsis of the literature on the trends in the Yoruba textile industry. It pays attention to spinning, dyeing, weaving, looms, warping, weaves, patterning, and functions of cloth. The author concludes that the precolonial textile traditions which have survived are those with products having continuing relevance. Bibliogr. |
