Abstract: | After outlining the historical background to banking services in Nigeria, the author focuses on financial service delivery under the structural adjustment programme (SAP) introduced in 1986, discussing the operation of conventional and quasi banks and finance companies under economic deregulation, the aftermath of deregulation, and the problems of the financial sector that culminated in the liquidation of many banks and non-bank financial institutions in the early 1990s.
