Abstract: | This article reports the results of a detailed analysis of the unpublished material from Quiha rock shelter, Ethiopia. The site was excavated in the 1940s by Lieutenant-Colonel F. Moysey whilst he was serving with the British Armed Forces during the Second World War. A ceramic-bearing lithic assemblage was recovered from the site. The assemblage also contained limited faunal remains. Following Moysey's excavation, the material was taken to Nairobi, where it is currently stored in the foreign collections of the National Museum of Kenya. The sample is small, possibly incomplete and constrained by the lack of contextual information, but it is important because it represents one of the few stratified, ceramic-bearing deposits from before the 3rd millenium BP in Ethiopa. Analysis of the material from Quiha indicates the presence of domestic cattle in the Ethiopian Highlands already in the 6th millenium BP. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
