Abstract:This study analyses the influence of product and input prices on hybrid oil palm hectarage expansion by smallholder farmers in the South-South zone of Nigeria between 1975 and 1996, using Akwa Ibom State as a case study. A single equation multiple regression, involving the use of the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimating technique was used in the analysis. The findings indicate that agricultural policy instruments aimed at engendering increased cultivation of hybrid oil palm by smallholder farmers should also be geared towards reduction in investment costs which must include subsidy on inputs among others.
