Abstract: | Local communities in Ghana are endowed with resources which have not been harnessed to their comparative advantage and development. Youth unemployment at the grassroots and inadequacies in local economic development could be traced to communities' inability to take stock of their resources, ignorance of intellectual property rights and how these rights can be used to protect and add value to the resources for their socioeconomic and cultural development. This paper explores the awareness and use of intellectual property rights by Kente weavers at Bonwire, and assesses the impact of Kente trade on the town's development. The lack of use of intellectual property rights and the desire by Kente weavers to have their designed patterns protected are evident in the findings and analysis of the data. Taking stock of local intellectual property assets, protecting, exploiting and commercializing them will enhance the economic development of local communities. Bibliogr., ref., sum.
