Abstract: | Indigenous games in South Africa risk extinction. The threat is created by a number of factors, including migration from rural to urban areas, the introduction of computer games, and the fact that older people do not have enough time to transfer their skills and knowledge of indigenous games to the younger generation. The focus of this article is on identifying some of the problem areas regarding indigenous games. The author identifies a number of indigenous games played in South Africa with a view to showing how they were played. Perspectives from various people in the country are explored in order to show the importance of playing indigenous games and identify problem areas. Some solutions are suggested and recommendations made for the conservation of this cultural heritage. Bibliogr., sum. [Journal abstract, edited] |
