About person:Thomas Hardie Dalrymple
Abstract:The article highlights twelve out of over four hundred digitized photographs taken by British colonial officer Thomas Dalrymple and held in the Royal Commonwealth Society Collections of the University of Cambridge Library, United Kingdom. The twelve photographs were taken between 1937 and 1942 and show various scenes in Bamenda prison and the kingdom of Nso, which is situated in the Bamenda Grasslands. Other photographs are of the kingdoms of Mankon, Babungo, Babessi, Bafut and Bali. Dalrymple was an amateur photographer, who, besides providing medical care to the colonial officers, missionaries and the local population, also took photographs of scenes associated with complex ideas about embodiment and representation of the spirit world, as well as scenes of communal activities. Most of the events and scenes photographed by Dalrymple are extinct or no longer practiced in the same manner as in the 1930s and 1940s. Notes, ref. [ASC Leiden abstract]
