Abstract:'Koranic education'. Methods for Transmitting Islamic Knowledge (Mauritania). Two levels for teaching Islam can be observed in Moorish society, as in most Muslim societies. The first involves a progression in learning the Koran and a spatial mobility represented by the (lawh) used for teaching. At a higher level, in a mahâzra, students deepen their learning of the Koran or else of one or more disciplines (law, grammar, etc.). Apart from commentaries written by local clerics to facilitate understanding and memorization, the same body of texts is taught in other Malikite countries. Oral mnemonics are also used to teach non-Koranic knowledge in the mahâzra as well as in families, by men as well as women, depending on the sort of knowledge (poetry, hadiths, etc.). But the only way to learn the Koran is by heart, i.e., memorization. Muslims consider the Koran to be God's own words; and reciting it is more valued than its written form, but the recitation must be faultless. This book's outstanding status explains why the same 'Koranic education' exists in all Muslim societies distinct from the ways of acquiring other sorts of knowledge. [abstract journal]
