| Abstract: | The main objective of the study carried out in 1983 was to examine the problems confronting the elderly population of Ghana and find out how best to make them functioning members of the society. Specifically, the study attempted to: find out the existing forms of sustenance and maintenance of the aged; identify the main problems and needs of the elderly; study the factors in the social, economic and political structure, influencing the phenomenon of aging in Ghana; examine the problems which the-rapid aging of the population is likely to create in the Ghanaian society; to find ways and means of guaranteeing the economic well-being and security of older persons in Ghana; indicate the areas in which the aged can make a meaningful contribution towards society; delineate areas where opportunities could be provided for the aged to participate in the benefits of development. - Notes, tab. |
