| Abstract: | Based on published sources, material in the Entebbe archives and local fieldwork, this study discusses the size, physical organization and function, in particular the urban character, of the ancient royal capitals of three kingdoms and principalities of central and southwestern Uganda: Ankole, Buganda and Bunyoro. It concludes that the royal capitals really were towns, serving a number of urban functions. Above all, they were the centre of sophisticated, centralized States. All of them were spacious, which was a necessity because a great proportion of the food production had to take place in town. For the further development of the urban districts of Uganda, this quality of 'garden city' should somehow be taken into consideration. Notes, ref. |
