Abstract: | The last twenty years have seen a great upsurge of interest in the role of community health workers (CHWs) as an essential element in the provision of primary health care throughout the developing world. Tanzania has supported a programme of primary care involving CHWs since 1969. This book, based upon extensive surveys and interviews carried out by the authors in the period 1980-1983, details the successes and shortcomings of the programme, and the way the lessons learned will be applied in the future. It is the product of a collaboration between he Muhimbili Medical Centre in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Similar programmes in Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe are also reviewed. |
