| Abstract: | History of diamond mining in Kimberley, South Africa (1871-1890). The struggles over the introduction of the compound system determine the shape of the book. These struggles were based on the conditions under which black and white workers were incorporated into the mining industry as wage labourers, the various forms of contract and subcontract that emerged under partnership, company and joint-stock company ownership in the mines, and the political conditions that enabled or obstructed the concentration and centralization of capital in Kimberley. There are chapters on dramatic points of conflict - the Black Flag revolt, the strikes of 1883 and 1884, the clash between town and mine over illicit diamond buying - and two chapters pay special attention to mining finance. |
