Abstract:First book in a series of three books on the media in South Africa. This book concentrates on the mainstream commercial press. Chapter 1 provides a general theoretical overview of the conceptual tools applied in the analysis of South African media throughout the series. Chapter 2 traces historically the political and economic context of the South African media and should be seen as providing the framework for the chapters that follow in the three books. The majority of te remaining chapters are case studies of specific historical or contemporary elements of the South African press, dealing with the long-running battle between Nasionale Pers and Perskor, the press and educational reform, labour reporting an the role of the press on issues of black housing.
