| Abstract: | The papers in this volume, which were originally presented to a conference on 'Third World trade unionism: equity and democratization in the changing international division of labour' held in Ottawa in October 1984, focus on some of the major issues confronting the world's trade unions today. The globalization of production, as well as the recent prolonged recession in OECD countries, have undermined the bargaining power of labour, both in the West and the Third World. Workers' responses to these new conditions are recounted from several parts of the world. Particular chapters examine Nigeria's relatively independent and effective trade union movement (N. Van Hear) and the potential role of African unions in the defence of human rights (R. Howard). One crucial issue raised is how far unions can develop integrated bargaining coordination across national boundaries, especially between Western and Third World countries, in the face of the power of multinational corporations. |
