| Abstract: | This book focuses upon the contributions to Kenyan society of two groups of Africans: those who were liberated from the Arab Indian Ocean slave trade and those who migrated to Kenya from the interior. These 'returnees', as the freed slaves were called, and refugees settled primarily in the coastal communities of Freretown and Rabai. They were pioneers and conveyors of the skills necessary to modernize Kenyan society. They assumed vital leadership roles in the developing nation's churches, schools, media, trade unions, and civil service. Although themselves political moderates, the repatriated Kenyans formed societies and cultural associations (e.g. the Coast African Association, the Mombasa African Democratic Union) that became important training grounds for the radical revolutionary movements that led their adopted country to political independence. |
