Abstract:Collection of essays, written over a period of some fifteen years, on the history of colonial Kenya and, more widely, colonialism in Africa. It is organized into five sections. Part I is concerned with the processes through which Kenya was brought into the orbit of British colonialism, how the institutions of colonial political control and economic development emerged, and how their internal contradictions and conflicts shaped further change. Part II consists of two jointly written articles (1979, 1980), in which the authors attempt through an examination of the experience of Kenya to develop an approach to the analysis of the forces that shaped the development of the colonial State. Part III consists of theoretical critique and a comparative analysis of capitalism and the colonial State. Part IV pulls together the various elements of the theoretical approach the authors have been developing and explores the implications for African historiography. Part V focuses on the long-term effects of the early colonial conflicts and on the Mau Mau emergency of 1952-1960.
