Abstract:	Thesaurus of African languages which addresses the detailed distribution, immediate interrelationships, nomenclature and current usage of languages spoken in Africa today, and their written representation. It includes a methodological introduction; an annotated inventory of 2550 African languages, classified into 315 sets and subsets; a country-by-country survey of languages spoken in 67 African States and adjacent islands, with details of language usage in education and the media, and relative figures for major languages; a discussion of an improved alphabet for the transcription of African languages, developed from UNESCO proposals; an extensive bibliography of some 1450 titles; and a language index with some 12000 entries.
