Abstract:A philisophical and historical analysis of African responses to the civilizational challenges coming from Europe and Arabia. The study focuses largely on the dialectical relatonship between the black inhabitants and the Euro-Western colonizers of the 19th century. It deals with two Abrahamic religions - Islam and Christianity - and their individual and collective challenges to African man. Special attention is paid to two intellectual responses to Africa's search for identity: Nkrumah's Consciencism and Senghor's Negritude.
