Abstract: | The author first came to know Louis Massignon, the French pioneer in Islamic studies, in 1959. From then until 1968, when he began to edit and translate Massignon's 'The Passion of al-Hallaj' Mason kept a diary of their meetings and of his own reflections on discussions with him and others. The present book is an edited selection of diary entries from 1959 to 1960. The book includes an introduction to the life and thought of Massignon, diary entries, letters transcribed from correspondents such as Thomas Merton, and Mason's personal reflections on al-Hallaj and his teaching, Catholicism, Islam and the story of Gilgamesh. It is also an account of some of France's most important Catholic intellectual figures of this century - Mauriac, Danielou, Menasce - as well as of Paris during the French-Algerian war. |
