| Abstract: | This book stems from a symposium on 'Development options for Africa', organized by the Kenya Chapter of the Society for International Development in Nairobi in 1983. It is now accepted in most African countries that certain weaknesses exist in current development strategies, and the authors of the 19 chapters of the book address themselves to some of the fundamental issues involved: What are the real economic problems facing Africa? To what extent can they be overcome by current strategies? Can Africa pin its hopes on recovery in the West? What can be done to reduce Africa's dependence on external factors? What lessons can be learnt from the past? Country studies are included of Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Botswana. Key areas addressed include alternatives for women, education, the role of the mass media, technology, and the informal sector. Both internal aspects of development and the international framework are considered. |
