| Abstract: | Of the approximately 90,000 Pokot, three quarters are pastoralists. The author worked as a health and development worker among Pokot women in Nginyang Division (Kenya) - where all Pokot are pastoralists - between 1980 and 1982 and returned to the area in 1985. The study deals with people's changing perceptions in their transition from pastoralism to increasing sedentarization and integration into a mixed capitalistic economy. There is tremendous pressure on the Pokot to 'develop', and this is epitomized in the Kiswahili word maondeloo (progress) which is used by both government and non-government agencies. |
